CHECKMATE CAMPUS is a personal safety app that ensures immediate emergency response should a student, staff or faculty member encounter a potentially harmful situation on or off campus.
Emergency button – Immediate Notification: Press and release the Emergency button and a distress signal is immediately generated. *
Emergency button – Safe Walk Feature: In cases where a student or staff is concerned about his or her safety, for example, when walking to their car in a dark and secluded area, they simply press and hold the Emergency button. If something were to happen, they release the Emergency button. *
* The student/staff has 30 seconds to cancel the alarm before it is transmitted to ProTELEC’s Emergency Monitoring Centre. The current GPS coordinates are sent with the distress alarm. The GPS coordinates are updated every minute until the alarm is resolved.
Safety Checks – Safety Checks provide an added level of protection. Ideal when working or studying alone. The student/staff can set up CHECKMATE CAMPUS to ring/vibrate their phone every 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. If the student/staff does not acknowledge their phone at each Safety Check, a distress signal is generated. They will have 30 seconds to cancel the alarm before it is transmitted to ProTELEC’s Emergency Monitoring Centre.
Emergency Response Centre – Being able to generate an alarm is only as good as the response to the alarm. CHECKMATE CAMPUS goes well beyond being just a smartphone app that notifies family and friends. It connects to our ‘5 Diamond’-certified and ULC-listed Emergency Monitoring Centre, where our trained operators will respond. Our operators are specifically trained to respond to emergency situations and our response begins with a ProTELEC operator calling the student or staff to determine if he/she is okay.
Geofencing – Every alarm is identified based upon whether it is within or outside the university’s campus and our response is dependent upon its location. If the student/staff does not answer our call and the alarm is from within the university’s campus, our safety response continues with the dispatch of the Campus Police to the GPS location of the alarm. We will provide the attending Police Officer with the critical personal information needed to find and identify the student/staff, including the person’s picture, their height, weight, as well as the description of their car. Once the University Police have been dispatched, we will then notify the alert contacts of the alarm. If the alarm is from outside of the university’s campus, the Campus Police will not be notified, but the alert contacts will be.
The GPS location is updated every minute until the alarm is cancelled and any location movement will be communicated to the Campus Police and/or the alert contacts.
Indoor Location Positioning – If the alarm is coming from within one of the University’s buildings, we will be able to provide more information than just the building location. Through CHECKMATE’s Indoor Location Positioning, we will be able to direct the Campus Police to the building, floor and likely the room that the student/staff is in. The accuracy of the indoor location positioning is dependent upon the number of WiFi hot spots in each Campus building.
Mass Notifications – CHECKMATE CAMPUS will also enable the University to send out notifications to all students and staff that have the app. The notices will appear on their smartphone like other notifications do; across the top of their screen. These Mass Notifications are ideal for a state of emergency type situations where the safety of students and staff is at risk.
